A peak state is simply a state of readiness and positivity. When you are in your peak state, you feel energised, focused and ready to conquer the world.
Why it’s so important to understand the concept of peak state and how to achieve it is because it can change your perspective on everything.
In Scenario A, you’re going in for an important job interview. You’re so nervous that you slept poorly, and it shows: you have bags under your eyes and all the coffee you’ve had to drink has made you jittery. You feel on edge, unfocused and the last place you want to be is walking into that meeting room.
In Scenario B, you are totally prepared. You know your stuff, and you’ve got the presentation to prove it. You’re well-rested, energised, and you just found out that your current employer is offering you a promotion so no matter what happens, you’re rocking it. You walk into that meeting room feeling sharp, skilled and ready to show it.
Which version of you do you think is most likely to impress the panel and land the job?
What it really comes down to is mindset—a positive mindset can change everything. Luckily, there are several easy ways to change your mindset and get yourself into that peak state.
Simply put, physiology refers to the state of your body. As personal performance coach Tony Robbins says, “If you want to master your feelings, you must be aware of how your feelings and your body are interconnected.”
“Your feelings are dictated by your movement. How you use your body affects how you feel mentally and emotionally.”
So if you want to change your mindset, the easiest place to start is by changing your body.
For a quick fix, check your posture. Standing up straight and breathing deeply can help you feel more positive and centred. For an energy boost, get moving—put on your favourite song and dance, or do a few jumping jacks to get your blood flowing. You’ll be amazed what a difference a small change can make.
In the long term, it’s important to look after the small things that keep you healthy. Get enough sleep, drink plenty of water, eat well and keep your body moving.
“Even though it can be tempting to skimp on these basic things,” says Tony, “don’t take that shortcut.”

Set your intention by focusing on the things you want and are working towards. This also means letting go of the things that are holding you back, like limiting beliefs or negative emotions.
“If you feel your focus wavering or needing a little refreshment, consider clearing your mind,” suggests Tony. “Exercise can help you release stress and centre your focus. If you don’t have time to hit the gym or go for a run, consider doing a short meditation to refresh your focus.”
Ask yourself what you’re going to focus on every day. Make it a habit to set your daily intention, and check in with yourself in the evening to see how you did—just make sure it’s a positive focus.
If you need some help getting started, try Tony’s priming exercise to help you set your intentions for your day.
We all talk to ourselves, and about ourselves. It’s important to shift away from negative language.
Think about how you talk about your loved ones, and then look at the ways you speak to and about yourself. If you wouldn’t say those things to your partner’s face, you shouldn’t be saying them to yourself either.
“How you use language determines what emotions you feel, so choose wise words when you speak to yourself,” advises Tony.
“If you ask questions like ‘Why do bad things always happen to me?’ instead of ‘What can I do to better my situation?’ you are more likely to feel powerless in your own life.”
To hold yourself accountable, Tony suggests keeping track of your positive and negative words.
“Every time you find yourself saying a word that takes your focus in a negative direction, replace that word with a new, positive one. If you’re struggling to catch your own negative words, enlist the help of friends, family and even coworkers.”
“Once you begin to alter your spoken word patterns and funnel them to a more positive frame, you’ll more easily be able to alter your internal speech to yourself.”
Once you start making small changes in these three aspects of your life, you should start seeing a noticeable difference in your mindset. The more attention you give to mastering your physiology, your focus and your language, the bigger the change will be.
