Strong leadership skills can make the difference between success and failure, whether you’re talking about leading a company, or simply organising a weekend away with mates.
Whatever the situation, there are things you can do to improve your leadership skills and help others see you as someone they want to follow.
Performance coach and entrepreneur, Tony Robbins, says that leadership isn’t something people are born with, it’s a skill that can be cultivated over time.
He outlines 6 traits that are common amongst good leaders, and it’s these 6 traits we’re going to help you focus on improving!
“True leaders are confident and know they can think—and act—outside the box to take their companies to the next level,” Tony says.
Have you ever heard the expression, fake it until you make it? Projecting confidence, even when you don’t feel it, can be just as powerful as actually being confident.
Practice projecting confidence by standing tall, speaking clearly, making eye contact and not fidgeting. All of these are non-verbal cues that help communicate self-assurance.
Focus is an essential leadership skill: “Like a grand master in a chess game, a good leader thinks out each strategy and understands how each of his or her actions will affect the rest of any given scenario,” says Tony. And that kind of forward thought takes a lot of focus.
If you’re not naturally bestowed with superhuman powers of concentration, don’t worry—focus is actually a skill that can be learned.
The first step is to limit distractions. Remove yourself from distractions by going to a quiet place, and take action to limit further distraction by silencing your phone, turning off your wifi, whatever it takes to help you zero in on one task.
The next step is simple: practice. The more often you do this, the easier it gets, we promise!
Tony points to honesty as one of the main factors that builds integrity and trust in relationships.
“Whether you’re trying to lead your business or your family,” he says, “the truth is that every single person you interact with looks to your own honesty and code of ethics to set his or her own bar.”
“Make sure each member of your team or household knows what your culture and core expectations are, and show them how much you value honesty in your everyday interactions with others through setting a valuable example.”
Over time, this honesty and openness will build respect and help others see you as a leader.
Good leaders lift others up, bringing a sense of optimism and enthusiasm to the tasks ahead. The key to this is to teach yourself to see challenges as opportunities rather than obstacles.
“Choose positive beliefs that will propel you forward, not negative thought patterns that will weigh you down,” Tony says.
“When you practice positive thinking, it becomes your powerful cognitive habit and allows you to reassure and motivate those around you.”
Decision-making is a vital skill for a good leader, and one that takes practice to master.
“A good leader is one who makes the decision that is right, not the decision that is easy,” says Tony.
“Making these kinds of calls doesn’t always mean you will be well-loved, but when you use good judgement to make decisions, it will earn you the respect of others.”
In practice, this means reacting rationally and thinking through the decisions you make. The more you do this, the easier you will find.

The ability to inspire others can make the difference between a good leader and a great one—and the best way to inspire people to share your passion!
When you are excited about what your team is working towards, that passion will naturally filter down and help motivate your entire team.
“One of the secrets to wild success is honing your leadership vision and communicating it to others,” says Tony.
“Inspiration is what pushes people to plough through difficult times—and to work on achieving their goals even when times are simple and undemanding.”
