A New Blueprint For Happiness

Create your blueprint for true happiness with these tips from performance coach Tony Robbins.

Did you buy into the idea that you are supposed to be married and have children by a certain age? Or would have had achieved more in terms of career, your dream car or house?

What else did you believe about life that hasn’t exactly lived up to your expectation? Is it possible that maybe these are the thoughts that may be holding you back from achieving your goals?

What if you let go of what you thought happiness would look like; started being grateful for what you already have?

What are you modelling your happiness after?

The society we live in teaches us that we are not good enough unless we do something different, special, unique or are extremely smart. The parameters in which others qualify those attributes may not be accurate.

It’s interesting how society praises celebrities, but neglects and negates the everyday heroes such as teachers, nurses, carers and other noble citizens that work hard for little credit.

The expectations that we have for others in this day and age has set an unrealistic standard for people to achieve. This doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t aspire to accomplish your dreams or goals, it’s just dangerous for us to attach our happiness to this ideology.

There’s no real template on how to be happy as it is unique to the individual who experiences it. The truth of life is that you must learn to create your own happiness.

If you are honest with yourself, you will realise the thing that most determines your happiness is the current conditions of your life right now. If those conditions were to change could you still be happy?

When we focus on being happy all the time we try and avoid pain, resulting in suffering becoming a fear that we try to avoid.

The truth is that the impact of pain in our life can be incredibly powerful. So whenever you feel like you’re going through a painful experience, use it as an opportunity to grow. From suffering, you can come out stronger and learn how to make your own happiness.

However, sometimes peoples use pain as the driving factor for change in their lives. Many successful people were motivated by the fear of never closing the gap between where they are, and where they want to be. This fear motivated them to create a future that would produce the life they wanted.

How can you create your own happiness?

Take the story of Enhamed. Although blinded since the age of 8, Enhamed became a Spanish world-class swimmer.

He experienced dark moments in his life, and the hurdles he faced made him start believing that he wouldn’t be able to achieve his goals and dreams. He became self-conscious and began to doubt himself.

His previous happiness blueprint left him feeling helpless and out of control of his ability to have joy.

His turning point came after reading Tony Robbins’ book ‘Awaken the Giant Within’. Enhamed began to realise that instead of using his struggle to inspire him to change and do more, he had been using it as an excuse to play the victim.

Slowly, Enhamed realised that he had become locked into a mindset that kept him from making progress. And although he knew he was always going to be blind, he made the decision to change his blueprint because he knew he still had tremendous passion in his life.

When you suffer, that is a signal for you to look at your blueprint. You have two options: either change your life, that is, do something to close the gap between where you are and where you want to be. Or, if you can’t change your life, change your blueprint.

Create your own happiness.

When Enhamed decided to let go of his old story and create a new one, his entire life began to change. He was able to ease his suffering, transcend his limiting beliefs, face his fears, and find an extraordinary life.

By pursuing his passion, and creating his own definition of happiness, Enhamed was not only able to find joy, but massive amounts of success.

Today, Enhamed is considered the best Paralympic swimmer in history, having won four gold medals in the Beijing games and two in the Athens Paralympic games. He now serves as a coach and shares his life story, helping to inspire and motivate individuals around the world.

Enhamed now describes the moment he became blind as “the day I won my blindness.” He realised that sometimes failing to adhere to what you had believed was your path can ultimately get you to your destiny. And, most importantly, that no matter what happens in life you are always more than that moment—and more than the story you have created.
