“We can change our lives. We can do, have, and be exactly what we wish.” – Tony Robbins
How you think and view the world around you affects the story that you tell yourself. If you want to learn to change your life, you need to learn to change your story.
“Our story affects what we do, where we go and how we approach life. A powerful story leads to a life of opportunity – change your story, change your life,” says Tony.
The first step in changing your story is to stop telling yourself things that disempower you.
Here, Tony shares some of the most common stories people tell themselves that create obstacles to success.
Tony says perfection is the lowest standard a person can have because it leaves no room for growth. And while completing something perfectly may feel good in the short term, it sets us up for long term failure. Our mistakes are what enable us to learn and grow – we discover our strengths by coming up against what we don’t know.
“Take the opportunity to learn from your mistakes,” says Tony, “find the cause of your problem and eliminate it. Don’t try to be perfect; just be an excellent example of a human.”
You only have to look at Tony’s life to realise that no matter how difficult your beginning, it’s no excuse for letting yourself fail. Everyone has obstacles to overcome, the important thing is not to let them stand in your way.
But if you keep telling yourself your life is so much worse than everyone else’s – well, it will probably stay that way.
“Identify your problems,” says Tony, “but give your power and energy to solutions.”
This is a tempting trap to fall into. It’s far easier to ignore something than face it head on, but the reality is that the longer we ignore our problems, the bigger they often become.
Our goal shouldn’t be to ignore problems, says Tony, but to put ourselves in better mental and emotional states to not only come up with solutions, but be able to meet the challenges and take action.
Often ignorance comes from fear – so if you find yourself thinking this way a lot, it may be time to evaluate your mental and emotional well-being.
Age, knowledge and experience only limit us if we allow them. Take an honest look at the beliefs you hold about yourself that may be standing in your way – the belief itself might very well be the only thing stopping you.
As Tony says,“create a vision and never let the environment, other people’s beliefs or the limits of what has been done in the past shape your decisions.”
“Ignore conventional wisdom.”
Happiness is a choice – it is a state we create through our actions and our thoughts. Change your thoughts, change your life. You have the power to create your own happiness.
Many people think that they are unhappy because of their circumstances. They strive to get a new job, buy a house, find a partner, only to discover that their unhappiness remains.
Tony says that achieving goals by themselves will not make us happy in the long term.
“It’s who you become, as you overcome the obstacles necessary to achieve your goals, that can give you the deepest and most long-lasting sense of fulfillment,” says Tony.
