Limiting Beliefs CareersGo deeper into the four most common limiting beliefs regarding careers.

Limiting beliefs are unconscious beliefs we hold about different aspects of our lives.

Personal and performance coach Tony Robbins is an expert at helping people break through these kinds of beliefs. He’s identified the four most common beliefs that affect the four biggest aspects of our lives: health, relationships, career and finances.

We’re going into each of these categories in depth. Today we’re looking at the four most common limiting beliefs about careers, and how to conquer them.

The only thing that’s keeping you from getting what you want is the story you keep telling yourself. -Tony Robbins

The 4 most common limiting beliefs about CAREERS:

1. I don’t have what it takes to succeed.

“In order to achieve success, you need to first commit to making a change,” says Tony, “and setting goals is the first step in turning the invisible into the visible.”

Studies show that people who make goals and write them down end up achieving far more (and earning far more) than those who don’t!

The more time you spend telling yourself that you don’t have what it takes, the more likely you are to live up to your own low expectations. Flip the script and start telling yourself a different story.

Take ten minutes right now to map out your goals. Make them SMART: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and within a Time frame.

Setting those goals is the first step in setting yourself up for success.

SMART goals are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Timely.

2. I could never do that.

Have you ever seen someone who is at the top of their game, a leader in their field, and thought, I could never do that?

Often this belief stems from a fear of failure, which is the most common fear that holds us back from achieving success.

In reality, says Tony, there is no such thing as failure; there are only results.

The secret is learning how to use your fear to motivate you, instead of letting it paralyse you!

3. I don’t have the skills or talent.

There is no talent or skill that will ever be worth as much as perseverance.

What sets those who make it apart from those who don’t often comes down to that one simple trait: perseverance.

“Turn uncertainty into action,” advises Tony. “When you commit, there will always be a way.”

Think about it, who’s more likely to succeed: the person with loads of natural talent who does nothing, or the person who shows up every day and does the work?

4. Successful people are just lucky.

If there’s one thing successful people have in common, it is not luck!

Consider this: Thomas Edison created 10,000 prototypes before he succeeded in inventing the lightbulb. James Dyson created 5,126 failed prototypes before successfully building a vacuum cleaner. Bill Gates’ first business failed, and he went on to found Microsoft.

Thomas Edison created 10,000 prototypes before succeeding at making a lightbulb.

Drive and dedication are worth much, much more than luck.

“All it takes is a small shift in your psychology or strategy to get the results you are after,” says Tony.
