Tony Robbins often says,
“The secret to living is giving.”
It’s a simple statement, but it contains tremendous wisdom.
True worth doesn’t come from possessions or achievements, but from the contributions we make to the world we live in. Giving to others feeds the spirit and helps us feel more connected to others.
Giving to others has been an important part of many cultures for thousands of years. The giving of alms is a key tenet in many religions, and non-religious charitable organisations have been around since the Enlightenment.
More recently, the concept of effective altruism combines the notion of giving with an educated approach to try and do the most amount of good.
Giving comes in many forms.
Donating money or supplies to charitable organisations is a time-honoured way of contributing, as is volunteering for a cause you feel passionate about.
But the real beauty of giving is that it’s not a one-time thing; rather it’s a spirit that you carry with you. When you start opening yourself up to how you might best give to others, opportunities for helping others will present themselves.
You don’t have to be rich to make a difference, or to feel like the wealthiest person in the world.
“No matter how busy or broke you may be,” says Tony, “you have something to offer others.”
In the video below, Tony shares a moving story about the moment he realised what it really means to be wealthy.
