Stop taking 2 steps forward - and 4 steps back

Do you feel like you’re taking 2 steps forward, only to take 4 steps back? Tony Robbins explains how we sabotage ourselves.

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us.” -Marianne Williamson

Being successful can be a frightening prospect, pushing you into the spotlight and drawing the attention of others. Most of the time that attention is positive, but sometimes it’s not.

Any success brings with it the risk of being criticised. There will always be people who want to tear you down. They might attack your methods, question your authority, or offer any number of criticisms designed to break you.

The important thing to remember is that these attacks are not about you.

For some, seeing others succeed only reminds them of their own failures. And the only way to make themselves feel better is to lessen your success.

The real risk is letting the fear of this kind of criticism stop you from pursuing your goals with everything you’ve got.

How we self-sabotage

“Once you succeed, you’re a symbol,” says Tony Robbins. “Someone else will see you’re successful and say, being around this person makes me feel insignificant. Now, they have two choices: become more significant, or tear down your building. It’s a lot harder to build the tallest building than it is to tear it down.”

“If you want success and you never want to be rejected, guess what’s happening in your head?”

“You’re doing this unconsciously: you know that if you make it through all the rejection and actually succeed, now you’re a target for even more rejection. So you take two steps forward and four steps back.”

So what can we do?

Many of us don’t even realise that’s what’s going on. This kind of internal pressure can take many forms, including our societal and familial expectations, but it’s important that we learn to ignore this voice if we ever want to achieve true and lasting success.

The key is in becoming aware of our actions and the forces driving them.

It’s not an easy task, and not something we often prioritise, but if you really want to break through and live to your fullest potential, this process is essential.
